4.6/5
Our Honest Rating

However, its new line of fly-fishing combo sets quickly earned their place in the hands of experienced anglers across the country.

Maintaining a simple approach for fly fishing industry, KastKing offers affordable solutions for beginners, veterans alike. Its range of products includes leaders, fly reels, fly lines, fly rods. Stepping things up a notch is its new inductee, the Emergence, offering everything you need to hit the water.

Not finding equipment when you need it the most can make you pretty agitated.

This KastKing fly-fishing combo outfit knows it. It includes tons of equipment and accessories, from the most used fishing tools to a convenient travel case. You wouldn’t feel more home with this package on your side.

The perfect COMBO!

The leader, fly line, fly reel, and fly rod come naturally. It’s nice to see forceps, a protective travel case, a dozen flies, and tons of accessories coming along.  When it comes to durability, the Emergence is highly reliable.

Crafted out of high-quality graphite, the rod will stand the test of time. For easy storage, the fly rod folds down to 4 convenient sections. Defined by 24 million modulus, this fly rod is in the moderate range in terms of action.

Benefit?

The medium fast action is suitable for anglers who just started fly-fishing. Only experienced anglers can handle fast action rods. With fast action rods, you can’t afford to make a small margin of error.

The medium fast action and effortless in the extreme, the Emergence allows beginners to cast easily. What surprised me is that the Emergence packed plenty of power in this action to drive a sizeable fly along with the breeze.

In our testing, we tested the 8 weight combo outfit. FYI, the combo set comes in four different weight versions (4, 5, 6, and 8). We wanted to target stronger fish like bonefish, bass, etc., hence the 8 weight outfit.

After casting, we found the rod is a bit stiff. But, it’s light and has a very comfortable cork grip. One of the biggest catch in our testing was largemouth bass.

Yes, largemouth BASS!

Pelican Lake of Utah is one of the top bass fishing destinations in the States. So, we were happy with our catch.  The bass weighed approx. 12 lbs. We weren’t worried for a second the rod would snap.

The reel has a smooth, adjustable drag, so any member of your family can use it. It’s an anodized aluminum reel, so you have a lightweight design. Besides, it’s ported extensively to cut some weight.

Despite being lightweight, it stood up to some serious abuse! The reel’s setting for fly line, leader, and backing create a stylish look.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Graphite rod
  • Tons of accessories
  • 9ft medium action rod
  • Easy to handle cork grip

Cons:

  • Has no instruction manual for assembly and fly attachment

Interested in taking up fly fishing?

4/5
Our Honest Rating

The budding angler in your family that’s increasingly becoming passionate about fly-fishing needs genuine fishing gear.

A bit of curiosity can develop into passion over time. Some toy passed as an adult rod and reel not only kills that passion, but also diminishes any chance to explore this vast industry.

That said, you don’t want to spend a fortune on beginner’s fishing gear, nor do you want to spend on “junky” gear.

So, what’s the SOLUTION?

The Maxcatch Extreme!

Money is always a concern for beginner’s gear. However, the Maxcatch Extreme strikes a unique balance between price and quality. Beginners wouldn’t feel frustrated with this, rather this combo set will help them master basic casting. Veteran anglers too will be surprised at how well it handles water…

…like a knife cutting summer fruit jelly!

Whether you’re going after trout or bass, you need a rod you can trust on for catching heavyweight fish. Aptly named, the Maxcatch Extreme features a medium-fast action rod that will allow you to pursue common gamefish, such as redfish, striped bass.

The durable rod is made of IM6 graphite. Since it’s a 5 weight (5 wt) rod setup, you might want to stick to pursuing moderate-size fish. If you want to up your game, choose the 8wt rod setup.

In our testing, the 9’ rod became a very helpful tool even for casting for midsize saltwater fish. A rod is a game changer in striking balance between reel and line. In the case of the Maxcatch Extreme, the silver-chromed rod matches individual components and complements each other. Rod case is a nice addition.

We had some issue with the reel. It didn’t withstand much abuse. But, it has a turn dial drag adjuster, so adjusting drag was effortless. A large arbor spool is included to offer you more control while fishing.

Is fishing a boring pastime? The answer is subjective.

But, when you have a high-quality cork handle, you can fish all day. The Maxcatch Extreme has a cork handle that you wouldn’t want to let go of once gripped.

In particular, I love the fact that the fly reel comes already pre-spooled and timesaving leader. It’s a tapered 4X leader that suits hook sizes ranging from 16 to 10. So, we had fishing gear ready out of the box.  With an extensive range of accessories, that includes clippers, hemostats, and a rod case.

It comes with a fly box and flies as well! There were 12 high-quality fishing flies for trout lovers.

In particular, the fly box has immediately become my favorite, as it’s waterproof and offers generous space to contain hundreds of flies. Overall, Maxcatch Extreme is the best fly fishing combo for beginners.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Come pre-spooled
  • Suitable for common fishes
  • 12 high-quality fishing flies

Cons:

  • Low-quality leader and tippet
  • Disappointing reel

We anglers tend to keep our fishing gear closer than an iPhone.

For this, fly fishing rod needs to come with a carrying case. Being able to break it down to convenient size also helps.

The Maxcatch Premier, in such a scenario, is the perfect combo outfit. It offers an awesome case that stores everything you need for the rod. You don’t need to take apart the reel as it can stay attached in the case.

When everything’s accounted for, how can fit the rod in there?

No worries!

The Maxcatch Traveler can be broken down into a whooping 7 pieces for easiest storage possible. Although the rod is 9 feet long, there’s no stopping.

Surprisingly compact and easy to transport.

In addition to the case, a Cordura tube is there to keep your investment safe and protected.

I also like the fact that it is very easy to reassemble. Just unzip the case and nudge each section and…

…BAMM!!!

Your rod is ready.

This incredible fly fishing combo outfit is designed from the group with flexibility and ease in mind. A lightweight design means you can cast more. Maxcatch, in this case, did a fine job. Maxcatch manufactured a lightweight rod without compromising on durability. The secret is IM10 carbon fiber though.

Comfort isn’t an issue with the Maxcatch. You can cast for hours without fatigue, since it has the cork handle. Besides, the AAA grade half wells design fits the hand well, so it was easy to grip.

When a tool looks good, you will feel great to work with. I want to note the Maxcatch’s avant-garde aesthetics, fit, and finish. High-gloss finish with green tinge really makes you feel that you’re working with a more sophisticated tool.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Foldable
  • Breaks down into 7 pieces
  • Graphite fabric rod blanks
  • Features a cork handle

Minimalistic build, great rod performance, there’s a little not to like about the Wakeman Charter Series.

4.1/5
Our Honest Rating

This model is super sensitive to feather touch.

Within milliseconds, you can feel the fish biting at the lure.

Amazing, huh?

Here’s more:

The rod is quite impressive at work. Investing a little effort, you can derive lots of action. I have been fly-fishing since 1974. I purchased this combo set as I’d moved to our new home on a lake in Colorado. This is a mid-long rod with action in the mid-fast range. The medium fast action means adequate power for beginners in the cast.

No kidding, I was able to catch 30 fish or so the first time. I’m pleased with the way it delivered quick, efficient action it delivered when I needed it.

I like the reel that has a simple drag system and is adjustable. I haven’t faced any difficulty working with the reel. The graphite reel seat may not be of the solid build, but it is appropriate for the rod in this line weight rod. It’s nice that it has a built-in hook keeper. The hook keeper allows you to store the fly easily.

It becomes easy to handle the rod when you have a comfortable grip.  Connected to the reel seat is EVA foam. EVA foam is used in comfortable, secure wear. The grip handle of the Wakeman Charter offers a secure grip. The guide next to the handle is made of stainless steel. The guide rings provide you with a strong, supportive setting.

The carrying case is a huge bonus. The reel quality may cause you to bump a star off. Overall, the Wakeman Charter is a bargain.

Pros:

  • Excellent rod performance
  • Comes with a carry bag
  • 45-feet long fly line
  • Secure grip
  • Portable

Cons:

  • Low-quality reel, prone to corrode

Now, ask yourself the following questions to get yourself started and narrow down your choices further.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you a beginner or a veteran angler?
  • What type of quarry do you need the rod for?
  • How many pieces can the rod be broken down into?
  • What particular line weight is the rod designed to cast?
  • What is the fly rod made of?
  • What’s the length of your fly rod?
  • What fly rod action can you handle?
  • What types of fish do you want to catch?

Let me tell you more…

Knowing about the best models in the fly-fishing combo line isn’t enough. Finding the product that best suits your needs is what the major aspect is.

The challenge here is to consider factors critical for making a successful purchasing decision. This section of the article is all about helping you find the perfect solution for your needs.

What to Consider Before Purchasing a Fly-Fishing Combo Set

Rod Action

A fly rod’s action specifies where the rod bends when pressure is applied. Power is what how much pressure you have to apply to make the rod bend. There are three types of fishing rods, namely slow action, medium action and fast action rods.

Depending on where the rod bends, the action types are as follows:

Action TypeBendingSuitable For
SlowIn the bottom third of the rod    New anglers
MediumIn the middle to the top half of the rod    Beginners
FastIn the top third of the third    Experienced anglers

Rod Length

If you’re a beginner, you may want to stick to a rod with length ranging from 8 ½- to 9-foot. The length can be smaller for fishing in small streams and ponds. For an overall general-purpose rod length, go for a 9-foot rod. We discussed many 9-foot long rods in this article.

Weight

What types of fish do you want to catch?

The answer to this question will set the right weight combo for your needs. Weight varies depending on the type of fishing you’re thinking over. You need to note the rod’s weight because the rod will be rated by it.

Check out the following guideline for weight as per fishing needs:

Rod WeightSuitable For
  0-4wtPanfish, small streams and ponds
  4-6wtTrout fishing
  5-8wtSmall and largemouth bass
8-10wtSalmon, redfish, striped bass, and other freshwater and saltwater
species

  10-12wtMuskie, golden dorado
  12wt+Sailfish and marlin

Line Type

Floating line or sinking line?

When shopping for a combo set, you need to consider the line type factor carefully. The wide range of combo outfits is available in floating line as opposed to sinking line. It’s because floating line is used heavily for trout fishing.

A fly line design is an important aspect for casting. The fly line also comes in many tapering designs, such as belly, forward taper, rear taper. Since many of those combo sets are geared toward beginners, a weight forward taper is the most common.

Reel

Reels come in two types, namely single action reel and automatic fly reel. Single action reels are hassle-free and less like to tangle, compared with the automatic ones. They are lighter too. But, automatic fly reels are appropriate for beginners.

Buying either of these reels is not enough, you have to look into some of the components of the reel as well. For instance, a drag becomes an important specific in numerous ways. Whether you’re working with a disc drag system or a click and pawl system, a smooth and reliable drag is a must.

Fish turn sharply, challenging you to a duel. A smooth drag is a prerequisite for such instances and for protecting your tippet.

Extras

It’s nice to find extras along with the combo set. But, don’t be fooled by the marketing of such extras. Many manufacturers jam-pack the outfit with extras instead of improving overall quality. Do not buy a combo set, simply because it contains tons of extras, rather focus on the quality of essential items.

Warranty

Prefer a combo outfit with a warranty.  Warranty is an indication of manufacturer’s confidence in the product and commitment to customers.

Choosing the best fly fishing combo under $200 can be a bit challenging. In this article, we looked at the best fly fishing combo outfits in different price points. We hope that our recommendations and buyers’ guide will help you enjoy a wonderful, fulfilling, and profuse journey in fly fishing.
